    Domain Name Questions

    Who is InterNic?

InterNic is an independent organization that is responsible for routing of Internet domain names i.e.. YourDomain.com. Domain name registration is done through a registrar.. No matter where you host your domain, you will have to pay a registrar on a regular basis (usually yearly) for your actual domain name.

Can I transfer my existing website to your servers?

Yes. You should keep your service with your old host for at least 48 hours while the domain name transfers. After the domain name propagates throughout the web, you can cancel your service with your old host.

    Who transfers my domain name?

We can help you with the transfer of your domain name or you can do it yourself. You must provide us with the name of the registrar you used and your user and password if any.

    What is a domain name?

A domain name (or second level domain) is http://www.yourdomainname.com. Technically it is only the "Yourdomainname" part. The .com .net .org or other ending is the top level domain. The "www' is the name of the virtual server your website is hosted on. If you wanted to you could have http://blahblahblah.yourdomain.com as this is set up in the virtual server setup process.

How long before my domain name is active?

Whether you have a new domain name or a transfer, it takes about 24-48 hours to propagate throughout the DNS servers on the web. During this time period, one person may be able to access the domain, but another may not. This is because the DNS server each person is using with their (ISP) dialup account may or may not have propagated yet (propagating basically means pointing to the right server for the domain name).

    Virtual Account/Billing Questions

How do I transfer files to my website?

To transfer files to your website for all virtual accounts, you will need an FTP program. We recommend CuteFTP which you can get here http://www.cuteftp.com . To setup your FTP program you will need to enter your domain name (or IP), username and password. Once you log in you will have to back up 2 directories and then go into the "web" directory to upload your files.

Can I use my Virtual account for commercial purposes?

    Yes.

Can I re-sell space on my Virtual account?

Yes. Everyone that has purchased a virtual hosting package from Atjeu qualifies for the Type2 re-seller package automatically. See our re-seller page for details. If you have a dedicated server or colocated server you can resell as much as you want at no extra charge.

    How am I billed?

Your credit card will be billed monthly in advance for the hosting service for the next month. Non-payment of an account will result in immediate disabling of your domain.

Can I have multiple domain names point to the same Virtual site?

Yes, each additional domain name is $5/month for virtual sites. For dedicated and colocated plans you can point as many domains as you want for no charge.

    What is a virtual domain?

A virtual domain is your own domain name ie yourdomain.com pointing to your own account with an IP address on our server. It is called virtual because you dont own the server, you are utilizing our server storage space and functionality. It is really the only cost effective way to be on the Internet. Having your own server connected to a real sized Internet line would be a hundred times more expensive than purchasing a virtual account on a hosting companies server.

    What is a non-virtual domain?

A non-virtual domain is the same as a virtual domain but "yourdomain.com" does not point to an IP address on our server. Instead it points to a folder, so no IP address in involved. This is also called name-based domain. It works the same on the Internet with the exception of the really old browsers which need to resolve to an IP. The only other disadvantage would be if our DNS servers were down you couldn't work on your site whereas if you have an IP based virtual domain account, you could type in the IP address instead of yourdomain.com and still get to your site. This won't help your customers but if you needed to get to your site to work on it while our DNS servers were down, you could use the IP. As a note, our DNS servers have never been down by themselves!

    What is an IP?

An IP is an Internet protocol address and has four groups of numbers. For example, 209.250.17.198 is an IP address. This is what the DNS servers resolve the yourdomain.com request too. People understand yourdomain.com but computers understand the IP address.

Can I access my site without using the "WWW"?

Yes. This is done in our DNS servers and has nothing really to do with browsers. We set all our sites up to resolve with our without the server name, which is usually "www".

Do you have a referral program?

    Yes, go to http://www.atjeu.com/referral.html

    How do I use SSI?

SSI is server side includes. Put your SSI code on the page you want it to run on, and then name the page with the .shtml extension instead of .html . By using the .shtml extension, the server will parse that page for your SSI code. This applies to all dedicated and Colocated plans also providing you have SSI turned on in your computers setup.

Where do I get CGI or PERL scripts like counters?

Check out http://www.worldwidemart.com for Matt's Scripts, http://www.scriptarchive.com and http://www.beseen.com and http://www.cgi-resources.com. Most scripts at all of these locations are free.

How do I setup my secure server for my Virtual hosting plan?

It is already setup but only Atjeu Publishing can put your files in the right place. Once you have created the page you want to be secure, email it to secure@atjeu.com and we will post it for you. There is no charge for posting the pages. To access your secure page, us the URL https://ssl.atjeu.com/yourdomainname/yourpage_you_gave_us.html .

What kind of server is my Virtual plan web site hosted on?

Most of our virtual accounts are hosted on the Cobalt Raq4r platform. The others (which are mainly high traffic or high cpu usage sites, are hosted on dual processor linux servers. Dedicated servers and co-located servers are self-explanatory.

What are the paths to Perl and Sendmail?

    Perl:    /usr/local/perl
    Sendmail:   usr /sbin/sendmail

    Dedicated Server Questions

    Who does my DNS?

You do your own DNS. All dedicated servers come with a built in DNS server so you can do your own DNS and be autonomous. To do your own DNS you need to register a host with your domain name registration company. This is a free process.

How do I register a host?

To register a host, you go to the company that you registered the domain name you will be using with such as Network Solutions. There, you fill out the host form and use a name such as ns1.yourdomain.com. This is a free process. Once the registration is complete, the host needs to propagate which takes about 24 hours. Then your DNS server will be active and any changes you make to it will be effective immediately.

What server software does my dedicated server come with?

All of our dedicated servers come with the following server types (at a minimum): http, ftp, pop, smtp, telnet, dns, imap and most also come with php, mysql and more.

What is the difference between the Cobalt and the regular Linux Servers?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both types. The Cobalt servers are very easy to use, they require no technical expertise. The Cobalts do everything for you such as rotating logs, virtual control panels and more. The are basically maintenance free. The Cobalts are also more secure then the regular linux boxes. The disadvantages of the Cobalts are; they are more expensive, they are not upgradeable (the os, kernal, perl etc... are not upgradeable), they are not modifiable as many of the existing services have Cobalt specific things that cant be changes, they are not hardware upgradeable except for adding memory, they are not quite as fast at cgi scripts (they are fine for normal websites but not good for developers or huge cgi scripting demands). Most people choose Cobalts for their ease of use and maintenance free features. Both the Cobalt and regular linux servers use linux so there is no difference in the os. The regular linux servers advantages are; they are upgradeable both hardware and software at any time, anything can be installed and run, they can be faster than the cobalts depending on the configuration chosen, they have more flexibility in what will run and can be compiled. The disadvantages of the regular linux boxes are; they are not maintenance free - in other words you have to do everything yourself or write scripts to do everything from rotating logs to dns entries, they are not user friendly if you are not familiar with being a sysadmin and with linux, so they are not for the user that is technically challenged, they are not as secure as the cobalts - advanced users will know what to do to tighten up security.

How long does it take to get setup?

If we have the configuration you order in stock it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to about 2 hours depending on the complexity of the setup once your payment information is verified. International orders will always take longer due to the verification process.

    Network/Connectivity Questions

What Type of Power Backup do you have?

All servers are connected to automated UPS systems which supply 24-120 hours of backup power, then the battery bank is connected to an automated generator system which can run indefinitely.

How many backbones are you connected to?

Four - AT&T, Savvis (Sprint, UUnet, and Cables and Wireless).

Is Atjeu a reseller or is Atjeu colocated with another company?

No and no - Atjeu is not a reseller and is not colocated with anyone. We operate our own Network Operations Center (NOC). In fact, we have many companies and resellers that are colocated with us at our NOC.

What are the servers connected to, switches or hubs?

Currently, every single server on Atjeu's network is connected to a switch. There are no hubs running in our server room. Connecting all the servers to a switch instead of a hub greatly increases the speed of our network and most importantly the security so that each server is hidden from the other servers behind our router(s).

What type of routing protocol do you use for redundancy?

BGP-4 for both fail-safe (over) and load balancing.
